The Scientist's View

The arc is not impressive thus far

Note to Joe about the deafening silence you discussed in your HRC release regaring Anne Coulter's use of Faggot:

I think I would prefer silence to the pablum below.

From Anne Coulter (the offender):

Ms. Coulter, asked for a reaction to the Republican criticism, said in an e-mail message: “C’mon, it was a joke. I would never insult gays by suggesting that they are like John Edwards. That would be mean.”

I find this almost as offensive as the initial quote.

From John McCain's spokesman:

“The comments were wildly inappropriate,” said his spokesman, Brian Jones.

Ummm...when is it actually appropriate to use the term "Faggot" and by whom? Grade: F

From Rudy:

Mr. Giuliani said, “The comments were completely inappropriate and there should be no place for such name-calling in political debate.”

Ummm....its a little more than just name calling. Or is it? And I don't recall it being a debate - it was Anne Coulter doing her schtick. Grade: D

From Mitt:

Kevin Madden, a spokesman for Mr. Romney, said: “It was an offensive remark. Governor Romney believes all people should be treated with dignity and respect.”

This is a little better. It addresses our commitment in America to basic human rights. I'll give it a C+.

OK...let's see what the HRC has for us:

John Amaechi Condemns Ann Coulter's Remarks
John Amaechi, former NBA player and a spokesman for the HRC Coming Out Project, makes a statement on Ann Coulter's use of hateful "F" word at yesterday's Conservative Political Action Committee event.

Hmmm....now I am starting to get suspicious. John was on a gay media embargo regarding his book because the Advocate signed him up to do "The Interview". That embargo ended this past week and look who pops up on the HRC website as the point person for this (I think major) problem. He has a blog (so cool) and he has a little video for people to watch (Note to HRC, some people in the hinterlands might need a transcript to read since they are still on dial-up - make a transcript available please).

Now you are going to pit Anne Coulter, a slick media whore who is on TV all the time, with someone who just came out of the closet and is best at bouncing a round ball. No offense to John, but this requires something a little more substantial and a little less cosmetic. I don't think that John's sets of talents are a good match for this unpleasant, but necessary, task.

Also, could HRC be a little less self-serving - using the Coming Out Project in this case should be supplemental to the HRC effort - not the official position and, particularly, not in this case.
